Our Vision

Adoption Guarantee Organization
Monroe, Adopted 2012

Monroe, adopted March 2012

We invite you to join us on our journey to becoming an Adoption Guarantee Organization. As an Adoption Guarantee Organization, we are committed to saving all the healthy and treatable animals under our care, and reserve euthanasia only for unhealthy and untreatable animals.  Our vision for the future allows us to remain true to our mission to advocate and provide for the humane care and welfare of all animals.

We have served both as a municipal pound and an adoption center. The board of directors recently adopted a strategic plan which eliminates the use of SPCA facilities and services for animal control purposes by January 1, 2015, and allows a greater focus on our mission. By definition, an animal shelter functions for the prevention of cruelty to animals through community outreach and education, and by finding permanent adoptive homes for animals. In contrast, a pound is mandated by state law to impound, or harbor seized, stray, homeless, abandoned, or unwanted animals for a specified period of time.

This transformation is indeed a journey. The success of an Adoption Guarantee philosophy is contingent upon the partnership of all animal organizations and the community, and not simply by ending the killing of adoptable animals within one organization. In a model community, no healthy adoptable animals will be killed simply because there is a lack of cage space or as a means of animal control. By working together, treating each life as precious, we can truly transform our community.
